Gig Review Part 1- Chris Murray

Friday saw Canadian ska hero Chris Murray play at one of the smallest venues I have ever seen a gig in.The gig was at Bedfords bar crypt and it is exactly that with a huge pillar in the middle and about the size of a large living room.
The night started with an acoustic set by the Norwich Ska group Smaller than You which was very good especially considering it was the first time they had played an acoustic set. They have a new ep out which is pretty dam good.
Second up was Mike Scott of hardcore band Phinius Gage who played a set of depressive songs(he did say half way through that his wife had left him last week). He drew the crowd in and was impressive
He was followed by Matthew Reynolds of Howards Alias and Skylar fame who played a soulful set with plenty of banter with a good sized crowd even if the promoter earlier in the evening did look worried.I have seen him in both of the bands and will admit that i already thought he was a great artist before the evening. He rubber stamped this and he is also a genuinely nice guy.
Chris Murray was Superb and played basically a request set with the audience dictating the set list.He plays roots ska and is at the top of his game.It was a storming set that left me with a vibe in the heart and a big smile on my face.He is back in the country early next year with his band and should be on your list of gigs to attend. His new LP with his band The Chris Murray Combo-"Why so Rude" is wonderful.
Another quality gig for the sum of six English pounds only.
Have a look at the myspaces of the above artists(they are linked) you will not be disappointed.
